The experience
Kumrovec sits in the Sutla River valley near the Slovenian border, about an hour from Zagreb. Your guide picks you up from your hotel and handles the drive while you watch the central Croatian countryside unfold. The village itself is a reconstruction of a 19th-century settlement, with 40 houses and barns made of pressed earth and wood, each one furnished with period pieces and arranged to show how people lived and worked: pottery studios, a blacksmith's forge, a wheelwright's workshop, a toy maker's space. The houses tell the story of Zagorje peasant life and the crafts that are now protected as cultural heritage.
The centerpiece is Tito's birthplace, now a museum with original furniture, letters from foreign leaders and memorabilia. A life-sized bronze sculpture stands outside. Your guide walks you through the house and explains his rise to power and the history of communist Yugoslavia. You'll also see his elementary school and an arboretum where he hosted public figures. Between the house visits and the village itself, you get a sense of both the personal and the historical, who Tito was and where he came from, set against the backdrop of the region's everyday past.
Before heading back to Zagreb, you'll eat a portion of homemade Strukli, a traditional Zagorje pastry filled with fresh organic cheese, made in the old way. In May only, the route includes a stop at a damask rose field where you can walk among the flowers, experience the scent, and buy rose products if you want to take something home. The whole outing takes 3.5 hours from pickup to return.
