Step-by-step itinerary
Castle visit and wine tasting
- Pick up at Zagreb hotel
- Drive north through countryside
- Visit Trakošćan Castle
- Walk around castle surroundings
- Explore wine cellar at Vuglec Breg
- Taste regional wines
- Optional lunch at traditional restaurant
The experience
The day starts with pickup at your Zagreb hotel and a drive north through countryside to Trakošćan Castle, built in the late 13th or early 14th century as a defensive fortress and rebuilt in the 19th century in neo-gothic style. Inside you'll see a collection of paintings, furniture and weapons. Outside, the castle sits in an English-style park with a lake and picturesque grounds designed to match the romantic architecture. Your guide walks you through the complex and its history as part of the private tour.
After the castle, you head to Vuglec Breg, a family winery where the wine-making tradition spans centuries. The visit includes a tour of the wine cellar: a working space where you taste five sorts of wine paired with cheese. This is where the region's wine is actually made and stored, not a tasting room built for tourists. If you want to eat, a traditional restaurant on the property serves seasonal and homemade dishes from Zagorje. Lunch is optional and ordered separately.
The entire trip runs 6 to 7 hours and stays private to your group only. Transportation is by air-conditioned vehicle sized for your party: an MPV for up to four people or a minivan for up to eight. Your English-speaking guide handles all the stops and entrance fees are already paid.

Top questions
What is Trakošćan Castle like inside?
Trakošćan holds a valuable collection of paintings, furniture and weapons displayed throughout the rooms. The castle was rebuilt in the 19th century in neo-gothic style, so the interior reflects that period's design and the collections the owners assembled over time.
How does the wine tasting work at Vuglec Breg?
You visit the actual wine cellar where the winery makes and stores its wine, then taste five different sorts paired with cheese. It's a working cellar, not a separate tasting facility, so you see where the wine is kept and made as part of the experience.
Can I get lunch during the day trip?
Yes, lunch is optional. A traditional restaurant at Vuglec Breg serves seasonal and homemade dishes from the Zagorje region, and you can order it separately if you want to eat during the visit.
How long does the entire trip take?
The day trip runs 6 to 7 hours from pickup at your hotel in Zagreb through both the castle visit and the wine tasting, then back to your hotel.
Is the guide English-speaking?
Yes, your tour leader speaks English and is with your group for the entire private day trip, guiding you through the castle and the winery visit.
