The experience
The day starts with pickup at your Zagreb accommodation and a drive through the countryside to Trakoscan Castle. Built in the late 13th or early 14th century as a defensive fortress, the castle you see today took its current form in the 19th century, when it was reconstructed in neo-gothic style and surrounded by landscaped grounds modeled on English parks. Inside, you'll see a collection of paintings, furniture and weapons. Outside, you walk the grounds around the lake that defines the castle's setting.
After Trakoscan, you drive to Varaždin, a city in northern Croatia known for its intact Baroque architecture and often called "Little Vienna." You'll walk the cobbled streets past historical squares, churches, palaces and the charming town hall. The Old Town fortress, also called Varaždin Castle, holds the city's most important cultural monument and houses a museum (closed Mondays). Your guide can recommend a local restaurant for lunch, or you can take free time for coffee on the main square. If you choose the walking tour option at checkout, a local experienced guide will lead you through the city's highlights instead.
The entire trip runs 8 to 9 hours with your private English-speaking guide. Transportation is in an air-conditioned vehicle sized for your group: a private car for up to four people or a minivan for up to eight. The castle entrance fee and Varaždin museum entry are included. If the museum is closed on your visit day (Mondays), your guide will adjust the itinerary accordingly.
