The experience

You arrive at Tamarindo Beach with no surfing experience or with some time in the water behind you, and Alvaro meets you to start with the fundamentals. The lesson covers how to position yourself on the board, how to paddle efficiently to catch a wave, and how to control the board once you're riding. Two hours gives you time to practice each piece without rushing, and the instruction adapts to whether you're five years old or fifty.

Alvaro is an ISA-certified instructor who learned to surf on Venezuela's central coast and has taught both children and adults in Tamarindo for four years. He teaches in English or Spanish, and the class runs as a private lesson or in a group, depending on what you book. After the session ends, fruit waits for you to refuel.

Public transportation runs near the beach, so getting there doesn't require a rental car or a transfer. The lesson suits any fitness level, and the ocean itself is what makes the teaching possible: Alvaro sees it as a source of calm and balance, and that shapes how he works with people who are new to the sport.
