Catch Your First Wave With a Local Who's Been Teaching for a Decade

A two-hour surf lesson in Tamarindo with Ronaldo, a Costa Rican instructor with over 10 years of experience. You'll start on land learning stance and paddling, then spend 90 minutes in the water catching waves with hands-on guidance. The lesson includes surfboard, rash guard, and pickup; instruction is in English or Spanish, and the class suits beginners and intermediate surfers alike.

The Experience

How much of the lesson happens in the water versus on the beach? Ronaldo starts you on land for 15 to 20 minutes, teaching you how to position yourself on the board, paddle, and stand up before you ever touch the ocean. Once you're confident with the basics, you head into the water for the full 90 minutes—the part where the learning actually sticks, because you're catching real waves and feeling what the board does under your feet.

Ronaldo meets you with a surfboard and rash guard already picked out for your size and skill level, so there's no gear confusion at the start. If you've never surfed, he walks you through catching your first wave step by step. If you've surfed before, he watches what you're doing and gives you feedback on technique—how to read the wave, where to position yourself, how to pop up cleaner. The lesson is built around what you actually need that day, not a script.

Pickup is included, and Ronaldo speaks English and Spanish, so language isn't a barrier. Bring a swimsuit and sunscreen; everything else—the board, the rash guard, the instruction—is part of the lesson. The whole thing runs two hours, which means you're not spending your whole day on this, but you're in the water long enough to feel like you've actually learned something instead of just paddled around.

  • 90 minutes of hands-on instruction in the water.

Top questions

What's the difference between this lesson and just renting a board and going out on my own?

Ronaldo's lesson includes 15 to 20 minutes of land instruction on stance, paddling and how to stand up safely, then 90 minutes of hands-on guidance in the water—he watches what you're doing and corrects it in real time. Renting a board leaves you to figure it out, which usually means a lot of wipeouts and no real progress. With instruction, you catch waves and build the muscle memory that makes surfing feel possible.

Do I need to know how to surf already, or is this for complete beginners?

The lesson is built for both. Beginners learn the fundamentals—how to safely catch a wave and stand up on the board. If you've surfed before, Ronaldo offers tips and feedback to help you improve your technique and tackle more challenging waves. He adjusts to where you are.

What do I need to bring, and what's included?

Bring a swimsuit, sunscreen, and a positive attitude. The lesson includes the surfboard, rash guard, pickup, and Ronaldo's instruction in English or Spanish. You don't need to arrange transport or buy or rent gear separately.

How long is the actual time in the water?

You spend 90 minutes in the water catching waves with Ronaldo's guidance. The other 15 to 20 minutes of the two-hour lesson happens on land, where he teaches you the basics before you paddle out.
