Private Surf Lesson Tamarindo Beach: Local Instructors
Learn to surf from someone who grew up surfing here
A two-hour private surf lesson at Tamarindo Beach pairs you with a local instructor for theory on land, then time in the water catching waves suited to your level. The instructor picks your board and rash guard, coaches you through the fundamentals, and finishes with fresh coconut water on the beach. Children from age 3 are welcome; guides speak English and Spanish.
The Experience
You arrive at the surf spot and work with your instructor to choose a board and rash guard that fit you. Then comes a theory session on land—safety, how to position yourself, how to get up on the board—so you understand what you're doing before the water. Once everyone feels ready, you head out and spend the rest of the two hours catching and riding waves. The instructor stays with you, coaching as you go.
Tamarindo Beach is one of the world's best places to learn because the break is forgiving and the water stays warm. Whether you've never stood on a board or you've surfed before, the lesson is built around your skill level and what you want to work on. The instructors are all native to the area—they know the conditions, the currents, and how to read the water on any given day. After you come back in, fresh coconut water is waiting for you on the beach, and you're welcome to stay and soak in the rest of the day there.
The lesson is private, so the pace and focus stay on you. Public transportation runs nearby if you need it; if you have questions about the area or Costa Rica in general, the instructors are happy to talk through them once you're done.
