SALT Surf As Life Therapy offers two-hour surf lessons in Tamarindo for all skill levels, from brand new to intermediate, with personalized instruction and a low student-to-instructor ratio. Lessons begin with 20 minutes of pre-surf coaching on safety, technique and mindset, then move into the water to practice waves during optimal tides. Instructors speak English and Spanish. Children as young as 4 are welcome, though kids 8 and under require a private lesson for safety. You choose between group, semi-private or private instruction at checkout.

The experience

The lesson starts on the sand with 20 minutes of ocean safety, basic technique, etiquette and the mindset work that keeps you calm when the water gets moving. Then you paddle out to spend the rest of the two hours riding waves and building real skills. SALT schedules lessons during the best tides and at the section of beach where conditions are most forgiving for your level, so the time in the water actually counts.

The small surfer-to-instructor ratio is what separates this from a crowded lineup: you catch more waves, get real feedback on what you are doing, and leave with the confidence to paddle out on your own. Surfboard and rashguard are provided. Whether you book a group lesson, semi-private or fully private depends on how much personal attention you want. Kids 8 and under are booked private for safety reasons, and kids as young as 4 can start.

All three follow the same two-hour structure and use the same beaches and tides. Pick based on how much individual feedback matters to you and your budget.

Do I need to know how to surf already, or can I start from zero?

SALT teaches brand new surfers and intermediate ones. The lesson personalizes to where you are: if you have never paddled before, the first 20 minutes covers everything you need to know before entering the water, and the instructors pace the wave practice to match your progress.

What happens if the ocean conditions are bad on the day I booked?

SALT schedules lessons during optimal tides and picks the best section of beach for your skill level, so conditions are built into the plan. If conditions are unsafe on a specific day, contact the school directly about rescheduling.

Are surfboards and other gear included, or do I need to bring my own?

Surfboard and rashguard are provided during the lesson. Bring a swimsuit, water shoes if you prefer them, and a towel. Sunscreen is recommended.

What's included in the lesson price, and what costs extra?

The lesson includes the two-hour instruction, surfboard, rashguard, and the use of the beach. Gratuities are not included. Transportation to the beach is not part of the lesson, though public transit options are available near Tamarindo.
