The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the color — that wild blue of Río Celeste isn’t something you can really prepare for. We were standing at the bank, helmets a little crooked, and our guide José grinned at my hesitation. He’d just pointed out a sloth curled up above us (I almost missed it), and then we were off — feet in the cool water, tubes wobbling under us. The jungle felt close, like it wanted to watch what we’d do next.

There’s this part where the river speeds up and you can’t really hear anything except water and someone ahead of me laughing — maybe nervous, maybe just happy. The air smelled green (if that makes sense), sharp with wet leaves and mud. José kept calling out names of birds in Spanish I couldn’t catch, but he’d point and I’d see flashes of yellow or red between branches. At one slow bend he handed me some volcanic mud to smear on my arms — said it was good luck for not falling in. My tube spun around and I almost lost a sandal right there.

I didn’t expect how peaceful it would get after the rapids — just floating, sky flickering through leaves overhead, everyone quiet for a minute except for frogs croaking somewhere nearby. We stopped at a natural pool to swim (José checked if last night’s rain made it safe), and the water was cold enough to make me gasp but so clear you could see your toes on white stones below. Snacks tasted better than they should have after all that splashing around. It’s funny what sticks with you: José’s laugh when I tried to say “mariposa” right, or how blue the river looked against my muddy hands.
