The Experience
Hands gripping the tube, I felt the cool splash before I even realized we’d started moving. Our guide—Carlos, who everyone seemed to know—just grinned and pointed out a blue morpho butterfly drifting above the water. The color of Rio Celeste is real, by the way. Not some Instagram filter. It’s this wild turquoise that almost glows against the green banks. I tried not to tip over while gawking at it—almost lost my sandal once.
The current was gentle most of the time, but there were these little bursts where you’d spin or bump into someone else’s tube (I apologized to a stranger in very bad Spanish—she just laughed). There’s this moment when you drift under a canopy and everything smells like wet earth and leaves, and you can hear birds calling out above you. Carlos kept pointing out things I’d never have noticed—tiny frogs, a tree that smelled like cinnamon if you scratched the bark. I didn’t expect to care about trees on a tubing tour but here we are.
We stopped at one bend for snacks—some kind of sweet bread and fresh fruit, nothing fancy but honestly perfect after floating for a while. Sitting on the rocks with wet feet dangling in the river, it hit me how quiet it was except for our group’s laughter echoing off the water. Towels appeared from somewhere (I still don’t know how they stayed dry). I thought about how easy it is to forget places like this exist until you’re actually here, drifting along with strangers who feel like friends for an afternoon.
