The experience

The meal arrives first: dishes built from what the Godínez family grows or sources that morning. Maize, yuca, plantain, slow-cooked meats like gallina achiotada, and traditional countryside stir-fries infused with the smoke of firewood. Everything is made from scratch in the rancho kitchen and served family-style, the way Costa Rican households have eaten for generations. Doña Yuri sits with you as you eat, sharing stories of how Playón has changed over four generations, folk tales rooted in the land, and the knowledge that shaped each dish. Agua de sapo or seasonal fruit infusions come alongside, prepared on the spot.

After lunch you choose: a 20-minute walk to a hidden waterfall with natural pools for swimming, or a gentler 10-minute walk to the Parrita River for a dip and quiet time. Both paths are shaded and pass through wildlife. Back at the rancho, Doña Yuri serves traditional cafecito (a chorreado coffee and homemade sweets like cajetas or warm seasonal treats) a slow moment under the trees before you leave.

Depending on the season and the day, you'll do one or more hands-on activities: harvesting yuca from the ground, grinding corn the traditional way, learning how plantains grow, or discovering medicinal plants. These are not demonstrations. You participate, guided by the family's own knowledge of the land and the agricultural practices that feed rural Costa Rica. Pickup from your Jacó accommodation is included.

Is this one for you?The four- to six-hour window means you can eat a late breakfast or early lunch in town before heading out, or return to Jacó with time to explore before dinner. The activity is gentle enough for all fitness levels, though it involves walking on natural terrain and some standing time in the kitchen and rancho.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What kind of food will I eat at Playón?

The menu changes with the seasons and what's freshly harvested from the garden or nearby farms. Expect dishes made from maize, yuca, and plantain; slow-cooked meats like gallina achiotada and chicharrones; traditional countryside stir-fries sautéed with herbs and infused with firewood smoke; and fresh tortillas. Everything is prepared from scratch following recipes passed down through generations, and served family-style with agua de sapo or seasonal fruit infusions.

Can I swim at the waterfall or river?

Yes. After the meal, you choose between a 20-minute walk to a hidden waterfall with natural pools where you can swim and relax, or a 10-minute walk to the Parrita River for a refreshing dip. Both walks are gentle and shaded, with plenty of wildlife to see along the way.

What are the hands-on activities, and will I have to do them?

Depending on the season, you might harvest yuca, grind corn traditionally, learn how plantains are cultivated, or explore medicinal plants. Doña Yuri's family guides you through whichever activities are happening that day, so you experience the agricultural traditions that nourish the countryside. Participation is part of the experience, but the activities are designed to be accessible.

How far is Playón from Jacó, and how do I get there?

Playón is 40 minutes from Jacó. Pickup from your accommodation in Jacó is included, so you don't need to arrange your own transport.
