The experience
You arrive with the theory already done (the operator sends it to you before you travel), so the three days focus on hands-on training and real dives. Day one is a full day in the pool with your SSI instructor, practicing the basic skills you'll need underwater. The second day takes you out for two open water dives where you apply everything from the pool session and start to see the underwater fauna Costa Rica is known for. On day three you complete two more dives, take the final exam, and walk away with your SSI certification card.
An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel, so you don't arrange transport yourself. The course runs in English or Spanish depending on your preference. All the scuba equipment (tank, wetsuit, regulator, buoyancy control device) is provided, along with snacks and bottled water throughout the three days. The instructor stays with you the whole time, keeping the group small and focused on safety and your own pace.
Is this one for you?Book this course if you're new to diving and want to earn your certification in one trip. The three-day structure gives you enough time to absorb the theory, practice in the pool, and complete the open water dives without rushing, while staying based in one place.

What is SSI Open Water certification and what can I do with it once I have it?
SSI Open Water is an international diving certification that qualifies you to dive independently to depths of 18 meters (60 feet) with a buddy. After you complete this course, you can dive at most recreational dive sites around the world without needing an instructor present, though dive operators will ask to see your certification card.
Do I need diving experience before I start this course?
No. This course is designed for beginners. You learn everything from the basics in the pool on day one, then apply it in open water on days two and three. The only requirement is moderate physical fitness. The operator does not recommend the course for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or if you are pregnant.
What happens during the open water dives on days two and three?
On day two you do two dives in the ocean near Tamarindo, putting into practice the skills you learned in the pool and seeing the local marine life. On day three you complete two more dives and take the final exam underwater, which confirms you have mastered the skills needed to dive safely on your own.
Will I need to bring my own diving gear?
No. All scuba equipment is provided: tanks, regulators, wetsuits, buoyancy devices and weights. You only need to bring a swimsuit, towel and any personal sun protection.
