The experience
The day starts with a theory session on the boat, where your guide walks you through the basics of breathing underwater and managing buoyancy. Once you've covered the fundamentals, you move into confined water practice: shallow, controlled conditions where you get comfortable with your gear and build confidence before heading to the reef. This setup means you're not jumping straight into the open ocean. You're easing in with an instructor right beside you.
The two dives happen at the Catalinas, a site off Tamarindo's coast. Your guide stays with you throughout both dives, watching your technique and making sure you're comfortable at depth. The whole experience runs about five hours from pickup to drop-off, which fits into a morning or early afternoon without eating the rest of your day. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange transport separately. All the equipment you need (wetsuit, tank, regulator, mask) comes with the booking, along with fruit and soft drinks during the boat ride.
This is not a certification course, so you won't leave with a card to dive independently elsewhere. It's designed for people who want to try scuba before committing to a full certification or who've dived before and want a refresher without the classroom. You'll need to complete a health questionnaire before you go in the water, and some medical conditions can prevent participation. Check with your doctor if you have asthma, heart issues or other concerns. Moderate fitness is expected. The physical demands of carrying gear and moving in the water are real.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and German.
What happens during the theory and practice part of the day?
Your guide covers the fundamentals of scuba on the boat, then takes you through confined water practice in shallow conditions where you learn to breathe underwater, control your buoyancy and handle your equipment before the open-water dives begin.
Where are the two dives, and what will I see there?
The Catalinas, a reef site off Tamarindo's coast, is where both dives take place. Your guide leads you through the site and stays with you the entire time.
How long does the whole experience take, and does it leave time for other activities?
The experience runs about five hours from hotel pickup to drop-off, so a morning departure leaves your afternoon free, or an afternoon start works if you have the morning elsewhere.
What equipment do I need to bring, or is everything provided?
All diving equipment (wetsuit, tank, regulator, mask, fins and buoyancy device) is included. Bring a towel and sun protection. The boat provides snacks and soft drinks during the ride.
Can I dive if I've never been underwater before?
Yes. The theory and confined water practice are designed for first-timers. You don't need prior experience, but you do need moderate fitness and should not fly within 18 hours of diving.
