Try Scuba Diving in Tamarindo is a guided introduction to scuba for divers without certification. You complete a medical questionnaire and gear briefing on shore, then descend for two dives at separate sites with an instructor, returning mid-day. The course runs 7 hours and includes all equipment, an air-conditioned vehicle for pickup, water, snacks and an English or Spanish-speaking guide. Children from age 10 are welcome.

The experience

What makes breathing underwater feel so natural? The answer is usually "nothing: at first." You'll spend time on the boat getting used to the regulator in your mouth, and instructors say the real challenge isn't convincing people to go in. It's getting them back out when the dive is over. The paperwork and gear fitting happen on shore before you leave, so when you reach the boat you're ready to focus on the moment itself.

Two dives at different sites give you a real sense of what scuba actually is, not just a single shallow test. You'll have a break between them: time to process what you've just done, ask questions, and let your body adjust. The whole day is structured around finishing around mid-day, so you're not exhausted by evening.

Pickup is included from your accommodation, and the vehicle is air-conditioned. You get bottled water and snacks during the day, plus all the SCUBA equipment: tank, regulator, wetsuit, fins, mask, everything. An instructor stays with you the entire time, speaking English or Spanish depending on what works for your group. Children from age 10 can join, though the operator does screen for medical conditions beforehand (spinal injuries, pregnancy, and cardiovascular concerns are reasons to sit this one out, and you'll fill out a health form before the experience starts).
