The Experience

I’ll admit, I was nervous about scuba diving in Cozumel — the idea of breathing underwater just felt so weird. But our instructor, Carlos, had this way of making everything sound simple (and safe). He cracked jokes while we tried on the wetsuits, helped me adjust my mask when it kept fogging up, and didn’t rush us through the paperwork. The ocean looked calm that morning, but my heart was racing a bit faster than usual.

We got a full rundown before even leaving shore — how to clear your ears, what to do if you panic (which I thought I might), and how to use all the gear. The boat ride out was short but salty; I could smell sunscreen and engine oil mixed with that sharp sea air. Carlos pointed out a pelican gliding right alongside us. When it came time for my first breath through the regulator… honestly, it felt unnatural at first. My brain kept saying “nope.” But after a minute or two, something clicked and suddenly it was like floating in another world.

The first dive site was only about 15 minutes from shore. We went slow — Carlos kept checking on everyone with these big thumbs-ups underwater. I remember brushing past soft coral (didn’t expect it to feel almost rubbery) and hearing nothing but my own bubbles. On the second dive, someone spotted a tiny blue fish darting between rocks; I grinned so wide my mask leaked a little. We surfaced for snacks and sodas back on the boat — chips never tasted so good as after that salty swim.

By midday we were back on land, hair tangled from saltwater and faces sun-warmed. I still think about that weirdly peaceful feeling of being under there — just you, your breath, and all that blue silence. If you’re even half-curious about trying scuba diving in Cozumel, this is probably the least intimidating way to do it.
