If you want something more than just sightseeing near Guatape, this private canyoning trip is pure fun—jumping into natural pools, sliding over smooth rocks, all with a local guide who knows every twist of the river. It’s safe, hands-on adventure in real Colombian nature.
The morning air felt crisp as we left our hotel in Guatape—windows down, you could smell the wet earth from last night’s rain. The drive out took about 45 minutes, winding past little roadside fruit stands and green hills that seemed to go on forever. Our guide, Juan, chatted about the river’s history and pointed out a flock of bright blue tanagers darting through the trees. I’d never seen water so clear as when we finally reached the canyon; it almost looked like glass over smooth stones.
Getting into the wetsuit was a bit awkward at first (they’re snug!), but Juan made sure everything fit right and explained how to use each piece of gear. We started off with a short walk along the riverbank—boots squishing in mud—and then came the first jump. Not too high, maybe two meters, but enough to get your heart going. The water was cold but not shocking; after a minute you barely noticed. We slid down rocks polished by years of current and swung across whitewater pools on ropes that looked homemade but felt sturdy. Every now and then you’d hear nothing but birds and rushing water—no cars, no crowds. The whole thing took about three hours, though honestly I lost track of time somewhere between laughing at my own clumsy landings and watching tiny frogs hop along the rocks.
Nope! The guide explains everything before you start and helps along the way.
Wear comfy clothes for under your wetsuit and bring dry stuff to change into after. A towel’s handy too.
The canyoning itself lasts around 3 hours plus travel time—plan for about 4-5 hours total door-to-door.
Kiddos need to be at least 10 years old and 4’7” tall for safety reasons.
You’ll get private transport from your hotel in Guatape, all canyoning equipment (including neoprene suits), insurance coverage, and an experienced bilingual guide who knows the area inside out.
