Pick tea leaves, then craft them into green tea you'll drink

A hands-on tea class in Yangshuo at Qixian Peak Scenic Area where you pick fresh buds in traditional gear, learn stir-frying and rolling from a local farmer, and taste the tea you've made. The experience runs about an hour and includes entry to the scenic area. A live guide speaks English or Chinese. Qixian Peak sits in a remote location, so advance transport booking is recommended.

The experience

You'll start in the tea terraces of Qixian Peak, dressed in traditional bamboo hats and carrying baskets as you pick tender tea buds alongside a local gardener. The soil here sits at high altitude and carries minerals that give the tea its distinctive sweet, chestnut-like flavor: the region produces award-winning organic varieties like Maojian and Biluochun. The picking itself takes you through the misty karst landscape that defines this part of Yangshuo, and it's the foundation for everything that follows.

After picking comes the transformation. You'll learn the ancient techniques of stir-frying, rolling, and drying that turn fresh leaves into finished Cuiyu green tea. A local farmer walks you through each step, showing you how the heat and motion change the leaf's color, texture and aroma. This isn't watching a demonstration. Your hands do the work, and the tea you're handling is the tea you picked minutes before.

The class ends with tasting. You brew and drink the tea you've just made, sitting in the scenic area with the karst peaks around you. The whole experience runs about an hour. Because Qixian Peak lies in a remote area, booking transport in advance through Didi or arranging a local driver through the venue is strongly recommended. Without it, finding a taxi can be difficult.

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What kind of tea do you actually make at Qixian Peak?

You craft Cuiyu green tea, a variety grown in Yangshuo's mineral-rich, high-altitude soil. The region's teas are known for their sweet, chestnut-like flavor and include award-winning organic types like Maojian and Biluochun.

Do you need experience to pick and process the tea?

No experience is necessary. A local farmer guides you through picking fresh buds and then teaches you the stir-frying, rolling, and drying techniques step by step. You learn as you work.

How do you get to Qixian Peak if you don't have a car?
