The experience

The day begins at your hotel in Yangshuo at 8:30am, when your guide picks you up in a private air-conditioned car. The first stop is the Guilin Tea Science and Research Institute, about 10km from central Guilin. There you spend 1 to 1.5 hours watching tea production and tasting leaves. Staff walk you through how to pick and process tea, and a performance show is included. (Note: if you're traveling between November and March, the tea plants won't be growing, but the tasting and performance still happen.) From there, the drive to Longji takes roughly 2 hours, with a 15-minute stop at the ticket office to purchase entrance fees.

Your first stop in Longji is Huangluo Long Hair Village, where Yao women grow their hair to lengths of 2 meters or more. A cultural practice you'll learn about before heading up to Ping'an Village. Ping'an sits directly among the rice terraces and is still home to traditional wooden houses where Zhuang and Yao minorities work the fields as their ancestors did for centuries. You walk through the terraced landscape with your guide, who explains how these fields were carved into the steep hillsides over generations. The scenery is open and relaxing. Most visitors spend time photographing the layered fields and the villages. Lunch is available in Ping'an (at your own cost).

The return journey leaves Ping'an around 4:30pm if you're staying in Yangshuo, arriving back at your hotel by 5:30pm. If you're departing from Guilin instead, you'll leave around 3:30pm and arrive back around 5:30pm. The full day is 8 hours from pickup to drop-off, and the private car means your guide can adjust the pace and stops to match your interests within that window.
