The experience

Your guide picks you up at your Yangshuo hotel at 8am and drives you three hours to Longji Rice Terraces. Once there, you have the option to drive partway up the mountain and hike down for roughly an hour and a half, or hike the whole way: the guide adapts to what you want. The terraces themselves are the draw: they rise in tiers so steep and so perfectly carved that they look like ribbons wound around the hillside. You'll stop at named viewpoints ("Stars & Moons" and "Dragon & Tigers"), where the scale of the thing becomes clear.

Lunch happens at 2:30pm in Ping'an Village, a settlement built into the same landscape. The houses are bamboo and wood, and the village still moves at the pace of donkeys and roosters. You'll have time to walk around and see how people actually live here before heading back down the mountain. The drive back to Yangshuo takes another three hours, and you're dropped at your hotel around 5pm.
