The experience

Your guide meets you at your downtown Shanghai hotel lobby and heads straight to the Old Town area. Yu Garden itself is five centuries old, built by a government official to please his parents, and walking through it means moving past rockeries, streams, ponds and pavilions while your guide explains the local customs and history embedded in the design. The nine-turning zigzag bridge and the oldest Hu Xin Ting Tea house sit within the garden grounds. Both are stops on the route, and both carry the weight of Shanghai's past alongside the 21st-century skyline visible beyond the walls.

From the garden, the tour continues into the Old Town bazaar, a maze of small streets where the market still operates as it has for generations.
