The Experience

The tour starts at your hotel at 9 a.m. with pickup and transfer to the Bund, Shanghai's famous waterfront on the Huangpu River. You'll walk past 26 buildings of different architectural styles—Peace Hotel, Shanghai Customs House, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank among them—and see the skyscrapers across the river that define modern Shanghai's skyline. The Bund sits at the heart of the city's identity: a century of history and the present colliding in one waterfront.

From there, you move to Yuyuan Old Street, the historic business district where Shanghai's earliest banks, jewelers and tea houses once stood. You'll walk the old alleys and then enter Yu Garden itself, a classical Chinese garden built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty. The garden is small but complete—pavilions, halls, rockeries, ponds and cloisters arranged across six distinct areas, each with its own character. After lunch (your guide will recommend a place based on your preference), you transfer to M50 Creative Park, a former textile mill now filled with contemporary art galleries, cafes and craft shops tucked into the industrial buildings.

The Shanghai Silk Museum comes next, covering 6,000 square meters and showing the full silk production process—from mulberry silkworm cultivation through the elegant finished textiles. Then you head to People's Square to visit Shanghai Museum, a large museum of ancient Chinese art divided into eleven galleries covering bronze, ceramics, paintings, calligraphy, sculpture, jade, coins, furniture and seals. The museum's exterior design—a round dome on a square base—symbolizes the ancient Chinese idea of round heaven and square earth. From there, you transfer to Pudong to see Shanghai's financial district and walk Lujiazui Ring Bridge, a good vantage point for photographs of the modern skyline.

The day ends at Shanghai Tower, the city's tallest building at 632 meters. You'll take the express elevator to the 118th floor—it reaches 18 meters per second and takes 55 seconds—where the indoor observation deck, called Top of Shanghai Observatory, is the world's highest. You have time to stop on the 119th floor and look out over both sides of the Huangpu River. On a clear day, you may catch the sunset. After that, your driver takes you back to your hotel.

The garden is known for its exquisite sculptures and carvings.

What happens at the Shanghai Silk Museum?

The Shanghai Silk Museum shows the complete silk production process across 6,000 square meters. You'll watch mulberry silkworm cultivation, see the silk reeling and production stages, and view the finished textiles. China is the world's largest silk producer, and most Chinese silk comes from mulberry silkworms.

How high is Shanghai Tower and what's the observation deck like?

Shanghai Tower stands 632 meters tall and is Shanghai's tallest building. The express elevator reaches the 118th floor in 55 seconds at a speed of 18 meters per second. The indoor observation deck there, called Top of Shanghai Observatory, is the world's highest. You'll also have time on the 119th floor to look out over both sides of the Huangpu River, and on a clear day you may see the sunset.

What's included in the price and what do I need to arrange?

The tour includes a knowledgeable guide, private transportation between all stops, bottled water and entrance fees to every attraction. Your guide will recommend a lunch spot based on your preference—a small local eatery or a more formal restaurant—but lunch itself is not included in the tour price. Hotel pickup and drop-off are part of the service.
