The Experience

Your guide meets you at the airport exit at 8:30 a.m. or your actual arrival time, then heads straight to the Bund. This waterfront on the west bank of the Huangpu River holds 26 buildings of different architectural styles—the symbol of Shanghai's blend of century-old history and modern skyline. You'll see them from street level, then cross Waibaidu Bridge, the earliest and largest steel bridge in the city, before boarding a one-hour cruise down the Huangpu River. The light show and both riverbanks unfold as you pass the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center and Jin Mao Tower.

After the cruise, you walk Yuyuan Old Street—historically the site of the city's first bank, gold shop, jeweler and tea house—and sit for a tea ceremony in an old teahouse. Then you enter Yu Garden itself, built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty as a comfort for a retired minister. The garden is small but contains all elements a classical Chinese garden should have: pavilions, halls, rockeries, ponds and cloisters arranged across six distinct areas. At noon, you eat traditional dim sum—Xiaolongbao, Shanghai's signature dumpling.

In the afternoon, you transfer to Shanghai Tower. The express elevator reaches the 118th floor in 55 seconds at 18 meters per second, opening onto the world's highest indoor observation deck. You have time on the 119th floor to look across both sides of the Huangpu River, then visit Duoyun Books on the 52nd floor—the highest bookstore in China, 239 meters above ground, with views of the city and sky. The final stop is the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, housed in the former Ohel Moishe Synagogue. The museum documents the lives of over 20,000 Jewish residents of the Shanghai Ghetto during the Japanese occupation in World War II, with photographs, films and personal items. Your guide shares stories about the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the neighborhood's modern residents. Afterward, your driver takes you back to the airport or hotel.
