The Experience
The day starts at your hotel at 9 a.m., then moves into Pudong, the financial district that transformed from farmland into one of the world's busiest business centers in two decades. You'll walk along Lujiazui Ring Bridge—a vantage point for photographing the cluster of supertall buildings—before heading to Shanghai Tower itself. At 632 meters, it's Shanghai's tallest structure, and the observation deck on the 118th floor is the world's highest indoor one. The express elevator reaches it in 55 seconds at 18 meters per second, and from there you get a bird's-eye view of both sides of the Huangpu River.
From the tower, you move to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, where five main exhibition halls cover themes from nature and life to wisdom, creation and the future. The museum is built around hands-on learning rather than passive viewing. After that comes 1933 Old Millfun, a former slaughterhouse from 1933 that's now a creative arts and fashion hub near the Bund. You'll have free time to walk its lattice windows, umbrella columns and covered bridges, and your guide will point you toward lunch—whether that's a small local eatery or a more formal restaurant, depending on what you're in the mood for.
The afternoon takes you to People's Square, the geographic center of Shanghai and the demarcation point between East and West Nanjing Road. You'll visit Park Hotel, an art deco landmark from the 1920s that was once Shanghai's tallest building and now marks the city's urban coordinate axis. Before heading to the Bund, you'll stop at the Bird and Flower Market near the intersection of Tibet Road and Fangbang Road—a local spot packed with flowers, bonsai, birds and insects, where you can see how Shanghainese spend their leisure time. The tour finishes at the Bund, where you'll see the 26 buildings of different architectural styles that line the waterfront—Peace Hotel, Shanghai Customs House, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank and others—and look across the Huangpu River at the modern skyline you started from. Your guide then drives you back to your hotel.
