The Experience

Your guide and driver collect you from your hotel and drive to the Shanghai Museum first. The museum spans 40,000 square meters and holds ancient Chinese art across multiple galleries—ceramics, bronzes, calligraphy, sculpture—and your guide walks you through the collection, explaining the pieces and their place in Shanghai's history. From there you move to Yu Garden, a classical private garden that dates back centuries, where rockeries, ponds and planted areas create a landscape that feels removed from the city outside its walls. Your guide shares the garden's stories as you walk.

After Yu Garden, you spend time at the nearby Yuyuan Bazaar, a pedestrian street lined with pseudo-classical architecture where vendors sell souvenirs and snacks. This is where you choose lunch on your own. In the afternoon you head to the Bund, the riverfront strip of colonial-era buildings on the eastern bank of the Huangpu River, where you can photograph the contrast between the old architecture and the modern towers of Pudong across the water. Then comes the one-hour Huangpu River cruise itself—you stay on the boat with your guide, watching the Bund recede and the high-rise skyline of Pudong come into view from the water. The tour ends at Nanjing Road, Shanghai's main shopping street, before your driver takes you back to the hotel.

The whole day runs 8 to 9 hours. You travel in an air-conditioned car with your guide; bottled water is supplied throughout. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as are all entry tickets and the river cruise. Wear comfortable walking shoes—there is significant walking at each site—and bring your passport.
