The Experience

Your guide and driver arrive at your hotel in the morning and the day is already moving. The Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall comes first—textual files, graphic displays, architectural models stacked together to show how the city transformed itself over decades. Then you're at Yu Garden, which has been here since the 16th century and still holds its shape: waterside pavilions, stone carvings, wood engravings done by hand. The garden sits in the old part of the city, and right next to it is Yu Bazaar, a pedestrian street lined with pseudo-classical architecture where you stop for lunch on your own—snacks, souvenirs, the rhythm of a market that's been selling things for centuries. You choose where to eat and what to buy, so there's no group restaurant holding you back.

The Bund comes next, a walk along the river with 52 buildings from different eras standing side by side—colonial, art deco, modern—all facing the Huangpu River. After that you take the elevator up the Shanghai World Financial Center, a 492-meter skyscraper shaped like a bottle opener. The view from up there is the kind of thing you can't unsee: the whole city laid out, the river bending, the density of it. You get time to photograph it, to stand there and let it register.

The tour ends in Tianzifang, the old French Concession neighborhood where Shikumen buildings—narrow, tall, brick structures with small courtyards—now house art studios, cafés, bars and handicraft workshops.
