The experience
The tour starts in Qingdao's oldest neighborhoods, where German colonial architecture and the twin-towered St Michael's Catholic Church define the Zhejiang Road area. You'll walk Zhanqiao Pier, a 1,312-foot structure built in 1891 that extends into Qingdao Bay and ends at a Chinese-style pavilion, then move through Badaguan Scenic Reserve: leafy avenues lined with villas built by British, Swiss and other colonial residents. Little Fish Hill Park sits above the city as a classical garden offering panoramic views across the waterfront.
The brewery visit centers on the 1903 Tsingtao Brewery, built during Qingdao's German occupation. You'll tour the manufacturing facilities and receive a complimentary beer tasting in the museum. The nearby seafood market, the largest in Qingdao, sits within walking distance if you want to explore it. The Governor's House, a German castle-style building from 1907 that later became the city's top hotel (Chairman Mao stayed there in 1957), anchors the colonial narrative of the first day.
Day two takes you to Laoshan Scenic Area and its Taiqing Temple, a 2,000-year-old complex with over 150 rooms spread across multiple courtyards and inner temples. The site is known as the birthplace of Taichi and remains the second most important Taoist temple in China. Centenarian cypress trees and a rare camellia line the grounds. Descending the mountain, you'll pass oddly shaped stones, caves and clear springs. The tour ends at the xiaoyushan finishing village at the mountain's base. The full itinerary runs 10 to 16 hours across the two days depending on your pace and interests.
Is this one for you?The two-day span lets you move unhurried through both the city's colonial districts and the mountain temple without rushing between them: the brewery, the pier, and Laoshan each get their own time instead of being squeezed into a single afternoon.
