The experience
The tour opens at Paseo 21 de Mayo, the viewpoint that frames the whole port city: the hills of Valparaiso, the vineyards stretching to the sea, and the dunes of Concon all visible from one spot. A small walk through the viewpoint takes you past craft and souvenir shops before heading down to Plaza Sotomayor, where the monument to the heroes of Iquique and the imposing Chilean army building anchor the city's history. From there, you ride one of Valparaiso's typical funiculars up the Alegre hill, a second vantage point where the art and architecture of the painted streets begin to show themselves.
The tour continues through Paseo Gervasoni on the Alegre hill, where you see the Concepcion elevator, the oldest still in operation, and the Lukas lookout house. You pass the church and two of the city's oldest cemeteries visible from the hill across the way, then descend through Anibal Pinto square, a busy gathering point for locals. The pace lets you take in the narrow stairs and colorful facades that draw visitors to these neighborhoods.
In Viña del Mar, the route follows the coastal edge: the symbolic flower clock comes first, along with views of the Wulff Castle built into the sea. You pass the casino and Peruvian Avenue, then stop at the Francisco Fonck Museum to see the moai brought from Easter Island displayed outside: a chance to photograph it without entering. The tour ends at Vergara Pier, the historic wharf now open to the public, where you can stand near the sand and feel the Pacific breeze. Private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle carries you through all eight hours, and your guide speaks English or Spanish.
