The experience

The tour starts in Viña del Mar, known as the "Garden City" for its parks and tree-lined avenues that run down to the coast. From there you cross inland through the Casablanca and Curacaví valleys (regions famous for white wines like Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay) before arriving in Valparaiso. The city itself is the draw: a historic port built on 43 hills, each one a neighborhood connected by narrow streets, steep stairs and the funicular elevators that have become the city's signature. You'll ride two of them (El Peral and Concepción) to reach the upper neighborhoods.

Walking through Cerro Concepción and along Paseo Gervasoni, you see the eclectic architecture Valparaiso is known for: colonial buildings painted in bright colors, murals covering entire walls, and street art that ranks among the most striking in Latin America. Plaza Sotomayor anchors the city center. The pace is set by your guide, who speaks English or Spanish and shapes the day around what interests you. Private transport moves the group between stops, and bottled water is provided throughout.

The full day, eight to ten hours, gives you time to move unhurried through the hills and absorb the texture of the place without rushing between photo stops. Lunch is on your own, which means you can eat where locals do rather than at a tour-group restaurant.
