The experience
The day starts with hotel pickup in Santiago and heads to the coast. Viña del Mar comes first: a photo stop at one of the garden city's landmarks, then a walk along the Costanera past castles and palaces from the last century. A cove nearby lets you watch sea lions and pelicans on the South Pacific shore before moving into Valparaiso proper.
Valparaiso itself is the heart of the tour. You hike through two heritage sectors on the hillsides: Cerro Concepción and the streets around it, where galleries, street art and outdoor balconies line the passageways. Paseo Baburizza, Paseo Ballesteros, the Piano staircase, Galvez alley. Then you descend via the El Peral funicular, a national monument built in 1901 that connects the hills to the port below. Plaza Sotomayor, the main square, includes the monument to the Heroes of Iquique. The Francisco Fonck Museum holds a Moai statue from Easter Island, a photo stop on the route.
The final leg moves inland to Casablanca Valley, known for its gardens and the vineyards that give it the nickname "vineyard of the sea." You taste two wine strains at one of the main wineries before the return to Santiago. The whole day runs ten hours with private transportation throughout.
