The experience

Pickup happens around 7:30 AM from your Santiago accommodation. The guide calls the night before to confirm the time and place. The drive takes you to Viña del Mar first, where you'll see the Francisco Fonck Museum's genuine Moai brought from Easter Island in 1951, a seaboard with views across to Cerro Castillo, and the flowery garden that houses the city's famous clock. The museum holds pre-Columbian artifacts from cultures that lived across Chile, and your guide explains their history as you walk through. You'll also pass the old German castle, Chile's first casino, and the fish market where sea lions gather near the beach.

The main event is Valparaiso itself. You'll ride one of the city's historic funiculars, some dating back to 1883, up the steep hills to reach the viewpoints and neighborhoods that make the city famous. Walk through Cerro Concepción and Paseo Gervasoni, both perched at the top with panoramic views of the bay and hills. The streets surprise you behind every corner: colorful Victorian and German Tudor architecture, vintage shops, and walls covered in street art by local and international artists. You'll cross the Italian stairs, donated by the Italian community as a shortcut down the hill, and walk through the labyrinth of alleys in the historic quarter where most of Valparaiso's UNESCO World Heritage sites cluster. Plaza Sotomayor, the city's largest civic center, holds the Navy headquarters and a monument to the heroes of the Pacific War.

On the way back to Santiago, you stop at one of the beautiful wineries in Casablanca Valley for a wine tasting. The winery has sale prices at the store if you want to buy. Note: if you've arranged drop-off at the cruise ship terminal in San Antonio Port instead of returning to your hotel, you'll skip the winery stop. The tour ends between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM, or earlier if you're dropped at the port. If you're heading to the port with luggage, report how many pieces when you book. The van can carry one large bag and one carry-on per person, and extra luggage incurs an additional fee.
