The Experience

“You have to try this,” said our guide, passing me a piece of ceviche at Caleta Portales. I hesitated — raw fish isn’t usually my thing — but the smell of lime and cilantro mixed with the salty air made it impossible to say no. Sea lions barked somewhere behind us, fishermen shouting over each other as they hauled nets. It felt like the real start of our day trip from Santiago to Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, though we’d already seen that Moái statue outside the Fonck Museum earlier (I didn’t expect Easter Island to pop up here). The drive along the Pacific was all gray mist and then suddenly sun — typical Chile.

Valparaíso is a riot of color and noise. We rode the El Peral funicular (the old wooden seats creaked under us) up into Cerro Concepción where every wall is covered in murals — some wild, some delicate. Our guide, Camila, pointed out a tiny café painted bright yellow; apparently it’s famous for its lemon pie but we were still full from lunch by the shore in Viña del Mar. I got distracted by a dog wearing a red scarf lounging on the steps near Paseo Gervasoni. The view over the port from there is kind of chaotic — tangled wires, blue ships, kids playing soccer on rooftops. It’s not pretty in a postcard way but it gets under your skin.

The wine tasting at Casablanca Valley was quieter — almost too quiet after Valpo’s buzz. A couple runs this small vineyard right next to an old molle tree (Camila told us it’s 300 years old; I believed her). They poured us two wines while chickens scratched around outside and their little daughter peeked out from behind barrels. The reds tasted earthy and sharp; maybe it was just being there that made them feel special? We sat at a rough wooden table with cheese and olives while they told stories about starting everything by hand. I still think about that light through the leaves above us.
