The drive takes you past the coastline, and the house itself—declared a monument in 1990—opens onto a view that explains why Neruda wanted to live there. It's not grand or polished; it's lived-in, cluttered with the things he loved.

After Isla Negra, the route moves to La Sebastiana in Valparaíso, perched on Cerro Bellavista with a view straight down to the harbor. Neruda was looking for a house that "seemed to float in the air, but was well settled on the ground," and when he found this one, he knew. The rooms are narrow and unexpected—you climb stairs that feel like they belong in a ship, and the colors are bold, almost jarring. The poet named it after Matilde, his lover at the time, calling her "La Chascona" because of her wild reddish hair. That same name ended up on the Santiago house, where you finish the day surrounded by his books, figureheads, and those collections again—the evidence of a life spent gathering things that spoke to him.
