The Experience

The drive out of Santiago was quieter than I expected — maybe everyone else was still asleep, or maybe it’s just that early morning hush you get before the coast. Our guide, Camila, had this way of pointing out things without sounding like a textbook. She told us about Pablo Neruda’s house, La Sebastiana, perched up on one of those impossible Valparaiso hills. We didn’t go inside but even standing outside, the view over the port felt like something out of a painting — ships drifting in slow motion and all those houses stacked up in wild colors. There was this faint smell of sea air mixed with coffee from somewhere nearby. I tried to take a photo but it never really catches what you see with your own eyes, you know?

Walking through Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción is sort of like being inside someone else’s dream — murals everywhere, bits of poetry on the walls, stray dogs napping in doorways. Camila stopped to chat with an old man selling empanadas from his window (I bought one; still warm and greasy in my hand). The streets are steep and cobbled so if you’re clumsy like me, wear good shoes. At one point we just stood at a viewpoint looking out over the city and nobody said anything for a minute. I liked that part.

Viña del Mar felt totally different — wide streets, palm trees, everything kind of tidy compared to Valpo’s chaos. We checked out that famous flower clock (it actually works!) and then wandered down to the beach where some sea lions were flopped out like they owned the place. Lunch was at Castillo del Mar right by the water; I ordered reineta because Camila said it’s what her dad always gets. The fish tasted fresh and salty — or maybe that was just my fingers after picking at bread rolls too long.

Last stop was the Francisco Fonck Museum to see an actual Moai from Rapa Nui right there in Viña del Mar. It’s weirdly moving to stand next to something so old and mysterious in the middle of a busy city park. The ride back to Santiago was mostly quiet except for someone snoring gently behind me (not naming names). I keep thinking about those painted hills above Valparaiso — how they look bright even when the sky goes gray.
