The experience
The safari starts with pickup from your accommodation in Puerto Natales before dawn, then heads into Torres del Paine National Park toward the east side where pumas are typically found. You'll search by vehicle and on foot in permitted areas, learning tracking techniques from your guide as you move through terrain where the animals hunt and rest. The guide holds wilderness first aid certification and speaks English or Spanish, depending on your group.
Around mid-morning you'll reach Laguna Azul for a coffee break with tea, mate, and charcuterie while looking out at the massif and the towers. The search continues afterward, either on foot through Cañadón Macho or toward the west side of the park. Lunch comes with views and includes a glass of pisco sour or wine alongside snacks. On the return to Puerto Natales, the guide keeps watching for wildlife, so the tracking doesn't stop until you're back at your accommodation after a full 12 hours.
Beyond pumas, you'll see guanacos, ñandúes, foxes, condors, armadillos and other Patagonian wildlife, giving you plenty of chances to photograph the landscape and animals. Keep in mind that pumas are wild and roam freely, so an encounter is possible but never certain: the guide's tracking knowledge improves your odds, but the outcome depends on the animals' movements that day.
