The experience
The day starts with pickup between 6:00 and 6:30 am for a two-hour drive to Torres Del Paine National Park. You enter through Laguna Amarga and begin the trek from the welcome center. The first four hours are the steepest climbing, but the route is designed around a stopping point: Chilean Refuge, a mountain shelter where you can use the bathroom, buy food and coffee, and rest before the second half.
After the refuge, the terrain changes. An hour-long walk takes you through a lenga forest, then the final push begins: another hour of climbing up a glacial moraine to reach the Base de Las Torres viewpoint. This is where the trail ends. You have time to rest, eat and photograph the towers before turning back down the same path, a four-hour descent to the vehicle. Trekking poles are provided to ease the impact on knees and ankles during both ascents and descents. In winter, crampons are included for icy sections.
The trek demands sustained effort over a full day, but the route is structured so you're never far from a stopping point. Guides are trained in the specific demands of this hike and lead in English or Spanish. Children from age 5 can join. Specialized infant seats are available if you're bringing younger children. The total time on the mountain is roughly 14 to 16 hours from pickup to return.
