The ride includes hotel pickup, a gaucho guide who briefs you on the basics, and coffee with pastries when you return. A guide who speaks Spanish leads the group through native forest and open meadow.

The experience

You start with pickup from your accommodation in Puerto Natales and travel to the base of Cerro Dorotea. There a gaucho guide meets you, runs through the fundamentals of riding, and answers questions before you mount. The ride itself takes three hours and climbs through native forest and meadows, crossing the unmarked border between Chile and Argentina as you go. The summit opens onto a panoramic view: Puerto Natales spreads below, the Almirante Montt Gulf lies to one side, and the Última Esperanza Fjord stretches to the other.

The return includes coffee and pastries, and the whole outing (pickup, ride, briefing and refreshment) wraps inside four hours. No prior riding experience is needed. The guide covers what you need to know before you set out.

What’s included

What's the ride like for someone who's never been on a horse before?

The gaucho guide gives a safety briefing and basics on horseback riding before you start, so no prior experience is required. The ride moves through native forest and meadows at a pace suited to the group.

How long does the whole activity take from pickup to drop-off?

The full outing is about four hours: pickup from your accommodation, travel to the base, the three-hour ride itself, and return with coffee and pastries included.

What can you see from the top of Cerro Dorotea?

From the summit you see Puerto Natales, the Almirante Montt Gulf, and the Última Esperanza Fjord all at once. The mountain marks the border between Chile and Argentina, so you cross into Argentina during the ride.
