The experience
You leave Puerto Varas early and drive to the foothills of Osorno Volcano, a 2,652-meter peak that dominates the skyline above Lake Llanquihue. The trek starts at the ski center at 1,200 meters elevation and climbs steadily upward on a route of volcanic stone and sand (or snow and ice in winter) toward the glacier viewpoint. The ascent takes at least three hours, and the path gains 600 meters in elevation as it switchbacks up the volcano's slope.
At 1,800 meters, you reach the glacier viewpoint and stop to rest. From this vantage point, you can see the Seracs (the jagged ice formations that break off the glacier face) from a position few hikers reach. The landscape opens to views of Lake Llanquihue below, Calbuco Volcano across the water, Sierra Santo Domingo to the side, and the Petrohué River winding through the valley. The descent follows the same route down to the Red Crater, one of the volcano's accessible side craters, before you finish at the starting point where transport waits to take you back to Ensenada.
The full day runs eight hours from pickup to return. Your guide speaks Spanish and carries trekking sticks for you. In winter months, snow gear is part of the package. The hike covers 3 kilometers each way (6 kilometers round trip) and demands moderate fitness. The altitude and sustained climb are real, but the reward is a glacier few people stand in front of.

Is this one for you?The eight-hour commitment means this trek fills most of a day and rules out other activities, so plan it when you have a full free day in Puerto Varas. The early start and sustained climb demand moderate fitness and acclimatization to altitude, but the payoff is access to a glacier viewpoint most visitors never reach.
