The experience

The day starts with hotel pickup in Puerto Varas and heads to Llanquihue, a town known for its sausages and the starting point of the Maullin River, sitting on the ancient Route of Settlers. From there the route follows the lake shore to Frutillar, a village built in 1856 with German-style houses and gardens overlooking Osorno and Puntiagudo volcanoes. You walk the old streets and can optionally visit the German Colonial Museum, which documents the settlers' lives, or see the Teatro del Lago, where the Frutillar Musical Week festival presents around 40 concerts each summer.

The tour continues to Puerto Octay, also on the lake's north shore and marked by German influence. It was once the main gateway for agricultural exports to Osorno. After exploring the ancient streets and main square, you head toward the volcano. The route passes Villa la Cascada at the base of Osorno, surrounded by native forest and a fine-sand beach, then climbs to Ensenada and the ski center. At the volcano itself, at 1,240 meters altitude, you spend about an hour taking in views of the summit with its eternal snow glaciers, Calbuco volcano, Llanquihue Lake, and the Pacific Ocean. Optional lifts go higher (to 1,450 meters at Primavera Station or 1,750 meters at Glaciar Station), where the views expand further. A coffee shop at the site offers refreshments.

Transportation is by car or minibus with a guide speaking your choice of Spanish, English or Portuguese throughout. The tour operates in all weather, so bring appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Hotel drop-off completes the day.
