The experience
The climb starts before dawn from Puerto Varas, arriving at the CONAF office around 5 am to register. The first two hours follow the lower volcanic slopes bordering the ski runs, gaining elevation gradually before you reach the glacier. This section builds your rhythm and lets the guide assess your pace before the technical climbing begins.
At the glacier, the guide stops for 30 minutes to teach you how to use crampons, ice axes and rope. The tools you'll need for the final push. The last three hours of climbing take you up the ice to the 2,656m summit, where the view opens in all directions across Los Lagos: volcanoes, rivers, lakes and forests fill the horizon. After time at the top, the descent takes another three to three and a half hours back down to the CONAF office.
Private transportation from Puerto Varas is included, along with brunch and all technical equipment: helmet, harness, ice ax, crampons and gaiters. The guide speaks English or Spanish. The full day runs 12 hours from pickup to return. Mountain shoes are rented separately if you don't bring your own.
