The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the crisp air—cool even in summer, with that faint scent of pine you only get this far south. Our guide, Martín, met us just outside Coyhaique at sunrise. He handed out harnesses and helmets, checking each one with a quick joke to break the ice. The drive to the climbing spot took about 30 minutes along bumpy gravel roads, passing sleepy sheep and the odd roadside bakery already selling warm sopaipillas.

We reached a quiet crag overlooking a river valley—no crowds, just the sound of wind and distant cowbells. Martín explained the basics: how to tie in, how to trust your feet on the volcanic rock. The first route looked higher than I expected (about 20 meters), but he climbed alongside me, pointing out good holds and reminding me to breathe. My hands shook a bit at the start, but by the second climb, I was grinning at the view—snowy peaks in the distance, nothing but green below. Between climbs, we shared thermos coffee and local cheese sandwiches on a flat rock in the sun.
