The experience
Cochamó's granite walls sit three hours' trek from the road, so the climb starts with logistics: a private car picks you up in Puerto Varas at 7am and drives to the trailhead, where you can load heavy gear onto horses (a separate cost) for the 11-kilometer walk to Camping La Junta. The campsite has composting toilets, water and tent space. Wi-Fi is available if you need it. This first day is about getting there and settling in.
Day two is reconnaissance. You'll practice communication commands and route planning on one of the local warm-up climbs (the Canteen, Dry Wall or Apnea), then move to the Amphitheater bivouac, a high camp three hours above La Junta. Day three is the main event: you wake at 4am to reach the Shark Fin route's base. The route climbs 525 meters in 10 pitches graded 5.10. If weather holds, you'll complete all 10. If conditions tighten, you'll climb 6 and descend to La Junta by evening. A certified guide manages safety throughout, and all equipment (helmets, harnesses, ropes, camalots and carabiners) is provided. The final day is the return to Puerto Varas, with the same horse service option available for your gear on the way down.
The trek in and out is steep and exposed. This is not a guided walk with climbing attached. You need genuine climbing fitness and experience on rock before you arrive. The guide speaks English or Spanish, and the group stays private. Just you and the guide on the wall.

Is this one for you?The guide speaks English or Spanish, so you'll follow instruction and safety briefings in your language. This is a private climb, not a group tour, so the pace and the route choices adapt to your fitness and conditions on the wall, but you need genuine climbing experience and high cardiovascular fitness before you book. This is not an introduction to big wall climbing.
Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Shark Fin route like, and how much of it will I climb?
The Shark Fin is a 525-meter granite wall split into 10 pitches graded 5.10. You'll start before dawn and aim to complete all 10 pitches if weather permits. If conditions worsen, you'll climb 6 and descend to camp. The route is the centerpiece of the 4-day adventure.
Do I need to bring my own climbing gear, or is it supplied?
All climbing equipment is provided: helmets, harnesses, ropes, camalots and carabiners. You bring personal climbing clothes, shoes and a sleeping bag. The guide supplies the technical gear.
How does the trek to Camping La Junta work on the first day?
A private car picks you up in Puerto Varas at 7am and drives to the trailhead in Cochamó. From there, it's an 11-kilometer walk to La Junta campsite. You can hire horses to carry heavy equipment for an additional cost (60,000 per horse), which most climbers do to manage the load over the distance.
Where do I sleep during the 4 days, and what are the facilities like?
You camp at Camping La Junta on nights one and three, which has composting toilets, water and tent sites. Night two is spent at the Amphitheater bivouac, a high camp three hours above La Junta where you'll sleep in a tent before the main climbing day.
What meals are included, and what do I need to arrange?
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are not included in the package, so you'll need to bring or plan food for the 4 days. The campsite has basic facilities but no restaurant service.
