Cooking Class in Viña del Mar: Learn Chilean Home Cooking
Lina's kitchen teaches you dishes her grandmother made.
A private cooking class in a local home in Viña del Mar where you prepare a two-to-three course Chilean meal alongside your host Lina, who draws on Norwegian, Mapuche and traditional Chilean cooking. The class runs one to two hours before you sit down together to eat. Chilean wine is included. You choose lunch or dinner at checkout, and vegetarian or dietary adjustments are available on request.
The experience
You'll cook in Lina's small kitchen in her Viña del Mar home, learning to make classic Chilean dishes from scratch. Lina is half Norwegian and half Chilean, with Mapuche heritage through her daughter, so the meals blend influences from all three traditions. She uses merkén (a dried, smoked chili central to Mapuche cooking), and quinoa in her preparations, and teaches you techniques she learned from her grandmother. Depending on the day, you might prepare charquican, a seasonal vegetable stew; pebre, a fresh salsa of tomatoes, herbs and spices; pastel de choclo, a Chilean summertime take on shepherd's pie; or empanadas de pino stuffed with local pine nuts, ground beef and spices.
The class itself lasts one to two hours, with you and Lina cooking together in her kitchen. After you finish, you sit down at her table with her and her kids to share the meal you've made, along with Chilean wine. The whole experience is private (just you and your host), so you get her full attention and can ask about ingredients, techniques and the stories behind the dishes as you work.
