Snorkeling in Grand Cayman: Stingray City & Coral Gardens
Stingrays at arm's length, then a reef full of fish: all on your own boat
A private snorkeling trip in Grand Cayman combines two stops: Stingray City sandbar, where you feed and touch friendly southern stingrays in 3–4.5 feet of water, and Coral Gardens barrier reef, where you snorkel through coral formations and schools of tropical fish. Captain David, with over 20 years' experience, runs the boat exclusively for your group and prepares fresh conch ceviche when in season.

The experience
The boat is yours alone, which means no crowds and no schedule pressure. You spend 1 to 2 hours at Stingray City, a wide sandbar surrounded by barrier reefs where southern stingrays (massive, iconic creatures) have grown so accustomed to people that they let you feed, pet and photograph them. The water runs 3 feet deep at low tide and 4.5 feet at high tide, making it accessible for all ages. Captain David explains why the stingrays gather there and shares Cayman stories and local history as you move between stops.
Coral Gardens is an 8–10 foot stretch of barrier reef where the coral variety and reef length give you more to explore than shallower snorkel sites. You jump into crystal-clear water and move through the reef at your own pace, spotting colorful fish, sea fans and the intricate marine life that lives there. The reef itself protects the island from storm surge, and the serenity of the spot, the operator's own word, comes from the sheer abundance of what you see underwater.
Masks and fins fit all ages. Snorkel gear is included. Captain David brings appetizers, a fruit platter, marinated conch (when in season), and a locally prepared Swanky Caribbean juice. Ice, bottled water and a cooler stay on board. He also photographs and occasionally videos the trip so you have a record of it. Alternative departure times are available if your schedule needs flexibility.
Is this one for you?The trip runs 3 to 4 hours with two water stops and boat time between them, so you're in and out of the water a few times rather than anchored at one reef all day. Book this if you want both the stingray interaction and snorkeling in a single outing without the crowds of a shared boat.

Top questions
What are the stingrays like at Stingray City, and can I actually touch them?
Southern stingrays at Stingray City are exceptionally friendly and accustomed to human interaction. You can feed, pet, play with and photograph them. The sandbar is shallow (3 to 4.5 feet depending on tide), and the stingrays approach willingly, making close contact and photos easy for all ages.
How deep is the water at Coral Gardens, and what kind of fish will I see?
Coral Gardens sits in 8–10 feet of water, deeper than Stingray City, so you encounter more variety of coral and a longer stretch of reef. You'll snorkel through colorful fish, sea fans and diverse marine life that inhabit the coral ecosystem.
How long does the whole trip take, and how much time do I spend in the water?
The trip runs 3 to 4 hours total. You spend roughly 1 to 2 hours at Stingray City and the remainder snorkeling Coral Gardens and traveling between the two stops, with time to rest and eat on the boat.
What's included in the price, and do I need to bring my own snorkel gear?
Masks and fins for all ages are included, along with appetizers, a fruit platter, marinated conch (when in season), a locally prepared Swanky Caribbean juice, ice and bottled water. Captain David also provides photography of the trip. You don't need to bring gear.
Is this trip suitable if I've never snorkeled before?
Yes. The trip is suitable for all physical fitness levels. Stingray City's shallow water (3–4.5 feet) and the private boat format mean you can move at your own pace and ask Captain David questions as you go. Fins and a mask make snorkeling easier for beginners.
