The Experience

The boat ride out to Stingray City takes 30 minutes, and somewhere around minute 20, the captain mentions that the stingrays don't always cooperate — they're wild animals, after all. You're sitting on the deck with a juice in hand, watching the North Sound get shallower and clearer, and you start wondering if you'll actually see anything. Then the water turns that impossible turquoise and someone points, and there they are, gliding past like underwater pancakes. The water's waist- to chest-high, which sounds shallow until you're actually standing in it and a stingray slides past your leg. Your guide stays close, talking you through what's happening, and you get about 40 minutes to wade around, take photos, let them come to you. It's quieter than you'd expect — just water, the occasional splash, and people laughing in that surprised way.

After Stingray City, the boat heads to either Coral Gardens or Barrier Reef for snorkeling. Thirty minutes in the water, mask on, watching parrot fish and angelfish move through coral heads that look like an underwater garden. The crew hands out snorkeling gear — goggles, fins, life vest — and if you're not a strong swimmer, they'll give you a floaty without making it weird. The water's warm and clear enough that you can see the bottom even when you're floating over it. Then there's Starfish Point, a calmer spot across the North Sound where you can see starfish moving slowly along the sand. It's the kind of place where you actually slow down instead of rushing to the next thing.

The whole tour runs three hours, and hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't have to figure out how to get to the marina or back. The boat ride back to shore is quieter — people are tired, sunburned, scrolling through photos. You're already thinking about which ones to send home, and your shoulders are starting to feel the sun even though you swore you'd reapply sunscreen.
