The experience

You have a free afternoon in Penticton or nearby, and the South Okanagan's wine country is a short drive away. This half-day tour picks you up from your hotel or a central point and drives you straight into the vineyards along Corkscrew Drive, where the cool climate produces the sparkling wines, Gewürztraminers and Rieslings the region is known for. The route itself is built around four stops at established wineries, each one with its own story and its own tasting room.

At Hatfield's Fuse (named after a 1929 dynamite blast that loosened rusty nails on a church the town was moving) you'll taste 4 to 5 wines in a fun, educational setting and have time to shop if something catches your eye. Bonamici Cellars, founded by two friends with a passion for Italian wines, sits on a 10-acre property surrounded by other world-class producers. The tasting room is new, and the vineyard is 9 acres of their own. Noble Ridge came from a life-changing European trip: Jim and Leslie bought land in 2001 and transformed 3.5 acres of old vines into a 24-acre vineyard producing award-winning wines. See Ya Later Ranch sits high above the valley in a 1900s stone home built by the eccentric Major Hugh Fraser, who planted the first vines here in 1920. The patio views are unbeatable, and the winery welcomes dogs in a "Barking Lot" of their own. Depending on the day, you might visit Nighthawk Vineyards instead (a family-owned boutique winery in the heart of wine country), or Wild Goose Vineyards, where Adolf Kruger's 1983 planting of Riesling and Gewürztraminer inspired the "farm gate" winery concept in BC and now operates under new ownership.

The guide stays with the group throughout, keeping the tastings educational and the pace relaxed. Bottled water keeps you refreshed between stops, and the air-conditioned van means the drive is comfortable even on a warm afternoon. Tasting fees are covered, and your guide's gratuity is included in the price. The tour runs four hours total, ending with drop-off at the same location you started from.
