The experience

We pulled up to Mission Hill just as the sun started warming the stone courtyard, you know that feeling when you’re not sure if it’s too early for wine, but then someone hands you a glass and it suddenly makes sense? Our guide, Mark, had this easy way of weaving stories about the Okanagan into every sip. He pointed out how the light hits the vines differently here (I didn’t notice until he said it), and inside the tasting salon there was this faint smell of toasted oak that made me hungry before we’d even talked about lunch.

I still laugh thinking about my attempt at swirling. I almost sloshed a pinot gris onto my jeans. The group was small enough that nobody minded. Actually, one of the staff at Quails Gate gave us an extra pour “just because,” which felt like a little secret between us. The Mission Hill tasting was more formal, but at Quails Gate it felt like being invited into someone’s family kitchen. There was this buttery chardonnay that I keep thinking about: maybe it was just the view over the lake or maybe I’m romanticizing it now.

Lunch came at just the right time (my stomach had been rumbling since winery number two). We sat outside, and even though there was a breeze off the water, it was warm enough to linger. Our guide had a cooler in the van for any bottles we picked up: smart move since I caved on a rosé from Jason Parkes. By winery four I’d lost track of which reds were which, but honestly, that’s kind of part of the fun. The drive back felt sleepy in a good way, windows down and everyone quietly happy.
