The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the way the glass of the bus window fogged up as we got closer to Niagara Falls — you could almost taste the moisture in the air before you even saw anything. I tried to pronounce “Vidal” properly and she grinned — “close enough.” The wine itself was syrupy and cold; it stuck to my tongue in a way I didn’t expect. We all laughed when one guy in our group tried to swirl his glass too enthusiastically and nearly lost half of it on his jeans.

Then Niagara Falls just… appeared. There’s no slow reveal — suddenly you’re right there at Table Rock Welcome Centre, feeling this low thunder in your chest and seeing mist rising like smoke. The Hornblower boat tour (that’s included) is loud and chaotic and so wet that my shoes squelched for hours after. But being that close to Horseshoe Falls — like actually inside its roar — it’s hard to explain except that everything else goes quiet for a second. Even Samir just stood there grinning under his red poncho. If you come in winter they do Journey Behind the Falls instead, which sounded almost mysterious.

Afterwards we wandered around Niagara-on-the-Lake for a bit. It’s this old town with flower baskets everywhere and shopkeepers who actually say hello when you walk by (not like Toronto). I bought fudge that melted before I finished it because it was warmer than I expected for October. On the way back, everyone seemed quieter — maybe tired or just replaying those moments by the water in their heads. I still think about that view from the boat sometimes, especially when I hear running water at home.
