The experience

Seven to nine hours means the day holds all the major sites without rushing between them. The route takes in the Royal Palace, built in 1886 and still the primary residence of the King of Cambodia, then the Silver Pagoda next door, where handcrafted silver tiles cover the floor and an emerald Buddha sits at the center. You climb the tree-covered knoll to Wat Phnom, the only hill in the city, where the first pagoda was erected in 1373. The Independence Monument, a 37-meter lotus-shaped stupa built in 1958, stands at the city's center. Wat Ounalom, one of Phnom Penh's five original monasteries from 1422, sits on the riverfront near the palace.

The tour also includes the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former school used as a detention center by the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979, where an estimated 20,000 people were imprisoned. About 17 kilometers south of the city lies Choeung Ek, the best-known of the Killing Fields, where mass graves were discovered after the regime fell. A Buddhist stupa there holds more than 5,000 human skulls. The Central Market, an Art Deco landmark built in 1937 and once the largest market in Asia, closes out the day with its dome structure and four branching hallways of stalls.
