The Experience

“You know, I didn’t expect the breeze to feel so good in a tuk-tuk,” I said to my friend as we zipped past the Independence Monument. Our driver, Dara, grinned in the rearview mirror and told us how the city changes after sunset—he was right, the light on the old French buildings looked completely different than in photos. We started at Wat Phnom, where incense drifted in slow curls and a group of kids played tag around the steps. Dara explained some history but also pointed out his favorite street snack cart (I still regret not trying those sticky rice cakes).

The Royal Palace was next—just the outside this time since we’d missed opening hours (our fault for lingering at the market). Even so, there were families picnicking on mats and teenagers taking selfies by the gates. The Friendship Monument looked almost out of place with its clean lines against all that traffic noise. At one point Dara stopped so we could grab a Coke from a roadside stall; he joked that it was “Khmer air-conditioning.” The whole tour felt less like checking off sights and more like watching Phnom Penh’s daily life swirl around us.

I liked seeing Wat Ounalom up close—the carvings are easy to miss if you’re not paying attention. Dara told us about King Sihanouk at his statue and how people still leave flowers there sometimes. We crossed over to Diamond Island just as dusk started to settle in; suddenly there were skyscrapers reflecting pink light off the water and people jogging along the riverside. It’s a weird mix of old and new here—one minute you’re looking at monks’ statues, next you’re dodging mopeds near a casino entrance. Three hours went fast. I still think about that first moment when everything smelled like rain on warm stone and grilled corn smoke.

What’s included

Your three-hour journey includes hotel pickup by Khmer traditional tuk-tuk for up to four guests, English explanations at every stop from your local driver-guide, cold beer or Coke along the way plus safety drinking water—and plenty of chances to take photos before returning you back where you started.
