The experience
The Royal Palace stands as one of Phnom Penh's most significant architectural achievements, home to the Cambodian monarchy. Next door, the Silver Pagoda holds centuries of historical treasures and sculptures within its grand structure. The National Museum, built between 1917 and 1920 in traditional Cambodian design, houses ancient Khmer art carved from sandstone, spanning both Angkorean and pre-Angkorean eras alongside more recent works. Wat Phnom, the temple that gave the city its name (Phnom Penh means "the hill of Ms. Penh"), carries deep significance to Cambodia's founding.
The tour includes two museums documenting the Khmer Rouge period of 1975–1979. Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum occupies the former high school S-21, where the regime detained and interrogated thousands. Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, where an estimated 20,000 Cambodians were killed, has been converted into a visitors' center. The ground itself carries the weight of this history, and after heavy rains, fragments of clothing and bone still surface from the soil. Wat Ounalom, the oldest Buddhist foundation in the city, serves as home to the Buddhist patriarch and offers a quieter spiritual space within the day's itinerary.
Russian Market closes the tour: the most popular market among tourists and expats, known locally as Phsar Toul Tom Poung. It earned its English name from Russian expats who frequented it during the 1980s, and today it's the best place to pick up souvenirs and local goods. Pickup from your Phnom Penh hotel happens in the morning, and you return around 6pm after the market visit, traveling in an air-conditioned private vehicle with your guide throughout.
