The experience
How much of Cambodia's coast can you see in a single day from a cruise port? This tour answers that by moving between two French colonial towns separated by 25 kilometers of rice paddies and small villages. You start with a 2.5-hour drive from Sihanoukville to Kampot, where the Praek Tuek Chhu River cuts through town and the Elephant Mountains frame the skyline. The colorful French-style buildings and red tile-roofed shop houses still stand from the colonial era, and your guide walks you through the streets to point out the architecture and daily life around a fishing village on the water's edge.
The tour then stops at a traditional salt field near the coast, where you watch salt being made by hand during the dry season: one of Kampot's most important products. From there, a pepper farm shows you how export-quality peppers are grown, harvested, dried and ground, with different varieties ranging from black, green, red and white. The drive to Kep takes another 30 minutes through villages and rice paddies. Kep is another colonial town, its old French villas slowly deteriorating after decades of abandonment during wartime, and the Crab Market is where the day's busiest moment happens: locals bring in their fresh catch and the market fills with activity. After the market, you have time to relax on Kep's tropical beach before the return drive to Sihanoukville, where a cruise shuttle bus meets you at the port.
