The experience
The Independence Monument, built in 1985 to honor Cambodia's independence, is where your guide meets you with a signage bearing your name. From there, the tour moves through the city's working heart: Tomnub Rolork. Koh Preap Pier, a busy fishing port where you'll see traditional maritime life without the tourist overlay, then Phsar Leu Market, where vendors sell fresh produce, seafood and street food. The market runs daily from 7 am to 6 pm, and your guide will help you navigate the stalls and try local dishes like spring rolls and grilled meats.
After the market, you'll climb to Wat Krom, a Buddhist temple on a hilltop with views across Sihanoukville and the Gulf of Thailand. The temple holds a large reclining Buddha and a shrine to the local deity Ya-Mao. Next is the Statue of Preah Thong and Neang Neak at Ream Beach roundabout: Cambodia's largest copper statue at 27.34 meters, erected in 2022, depicting the legendary co-founders of the ancient Khmer state. A quick stop at the Golden Lions Roundabout, built in 1996 with two golden lion statues, rounds out the cultural landmarks.
The tour ends with a stroll along Otres Beach or Sokha Beach, where you can rest and grab a coffee or lunch at your own expense if you want. Your guide then drops you at the shuttle bus station for your return to the cruise ship. The whole outing runs five to six hours, and you travel in shared air-conditioned transport with a small group of other cruise passengers.
